Everybody pretty much is too young to have seen that.

I was in a building Saturday that gave its age away
because the original ceiling (above a dropped panel
ceiling ) had real 1X4 planks. I forget how old that
makes it....

Part if the <4" 2X4 might have something to do with the advent of
drywall, I have heard. Not sure it makes any *sense*, but
it's been said.

Nope. Doesnt explain why both dimensions are affected.
