1. Academic enlightment. Scienctific discovery unraveled human traditions,
especially moral authority. This leading to a promulgation of intellectual
arrogance whereby, the masses became 'ignorant' in the eye of those
intellectual elites...much like apes that a Jane Goodall 'objectively'
oversaw in the wild.
2. An evolving socialist doctrine, rising from the ashes of the old
communist manifesto of forceful overthrow, to become a 'softer' revolution
'through the institutions over decades' as promoted by strategically placed
new 'cultural marxist' thinking intellectuals.
3. Civil Rights legislation giving all minorities legal recourse with which,
anti-establishment sentiment gained power to overthrow and bring down
traditional power hierarchies along racial lines. Add to this surging 'anti
movement' the enjoinment of women et.al.
4. The decline of God in people's lives.

The United States was founded on 'liberal' humanistic ideals. "All men
equal" "consent of the governed" "freedom of speech" all this stuff came
from or though 'the enlightenment'. The liberal John Stewart Mill being
one of the direct influences on what we think of today as American ideals.
So as far of 'taking over' western culture, at least in The United States,
it is the liberal who have been usurped, as opposed to the 'liberals' of
today.

The communists ideal was state centric economic system with a proletarian
political center. I see this as not being anywhere near the case in the
United States.
