It was? In what sense?
Also, technically, it was set in Korea, although I don't think you hear the
word, but it was scrolled by, once, at the very beginning, I think ("And
then there was Korea....").
Hollywood had no previous experience (is there any other kind?) in making
films about increasingly unpopular wars that the US was losing. Maybe they
will do better this time with one under their belt. But it is more
chickenshit than it was then, so don't count on it.

Sam Fuller's CHINA GATE (1957) was about the Vietnam war, but before
the U.S. entered it. (Gene Barry and Nat King Cole play American
mercenaries of some sort.)
Joseph L. Mankiewicz's THE QUIET AMERICAN (1958) was based on Graham
Greene's book about the Indochina War, when the French were fighting
it. It was even shot on location in Saigon. Audie Murphy played a
mysterious American representing America's interests. Very critical of
U.S. interventionism until the movie takes a sudden right turn away
from Greene's politics just before the end. Fascinating movie, but the
2003 remake is a much better adaptation of the book.
Burt Reynolds made a movie in the mid-1960s set in Vietnam (OPERATION
CIA, I think).
Marshall Thompson starred in another mid-60s Vietnam film, A YANK IN
VIETNAM.
