Is the only difference that it is profitable for the company that
makes it or are there other differences?

Try to imagine facing peak oil w/o cheap instant communications.
Everything then now seems quaint. This effect will be a great aid in
moving away from a profligate waste of fuel. SUVs already seem
quaint.
