Hofmann, LSD, and Modern Medicine

Author: J Jones
Date: Apr 30, 2008 15:08

The discoverer of LSD, Albert Hofmann, died today.

The medical neglect of LSD is an inevitable consequence of the illness
based medical model itself. It just isn't possible to use LSD as part of
a regime, as a managed palliative, cure or restorer of 'disorder'. The
experiences that emerge from LSD challenge even the notion of
'prescribing'. This is not to say that LSD has not been used to help
'depressives' and other people apportioned a pigeon-hole in the DSMIV
menagerie, but such use in practice has not followed the medical model.

What is surprising about the unusual range, depth and effectual power of
experiences that can be initiated by LSD is that these experiences are
not themselves brought by this chemical but, as its prosleytes concur,
they simply expose facets of the individual persona and the world he/she
inhabits.
