I think what he said is very relative to the discussion.
It's likely that Peter knew the Old Testament, too.
A New Testament verse about the daystar is found in
2 Peter 1:19:
"Wh have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto
ye do wel that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth
in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise
in your hearts:

The next two verses show that the author got the idea
from the Old Testament, but not just from men, but
from men inspired by God to write what they did:
2 Pe. 1:20-21:
20. "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the
scripture is of any private interpretation.
21. For the prophecy came not in old time by the
will of man: but holy men of God spake as they
were moved by the Holy Ghost."

As for metaphor, it's very obvious that the writer of
2 Peter was patterning his statement after the only
star visible on earth in the daytime, the sun. But it's
also obvious that he is referring to someone following
the Son of God in his heart, and that he is comparing
the Sun with the Son.
