If you can find a copy, I'd urge you to read a paperback called: /The
Age of
Enlightenment/ (by Isaiah Berlin, Mentor, 1956), which was part of a
popular series on philosophy. Berlin does a good job of showing
Berkeley's theory as a rational response to Locke's.
One important point Berlin makes clear is that Berkeley's main thesis
- that we can be aware only of ideas - is already found full-blown in
Locke; and therefore already enjoyed wide popular acceptance. Here's
how he puts it in a penultimate paragraph:
