What phrase would you use if this were a time before the phrase 'virtual
reality' was invented? Folk lore? Gods?

It would have to be of folk lore origin.
Thus, probably "spirit". maybe even " human spirit".
Thus an intelligent representational machine could be said
to have a "machine spirit".
