I guess you could equate this to discussion about "the selfish gene".
At a basic level, i think we are like any other organism - we're meant
to eat, and mate while keep from being eaten.
I can't solve the world's problems. I can't alone end world hunger. I
can't find a home for every homeless person. And it's my job to
either.
But is it my job to care at all ?
Is it OUR job to care *at all* ?
Why should I help someone else? My job is to eat and mate. As long as
no one is preventing me from doing this, why should I bother with
anyone?
No one's going to help me in my life. I have to get a job. I have to
pay bills. I have to jump through all the hoops in order to live the
way this body is meant to, no one's gonna hand it to me.
So is it so bad not to care about anyone else?

Yes, feeding, fighting, fleeing, and f***ing are instinctive
modes of behavior.
