The only rights that animals have are those that are bestowed upon
them by humans. it is easy to over intellectualise the issue but the
reality is that a baboon challenging a gun-wielding somalian warlord
has roughly the same "rights" as a piece of steak has not to be eaten
and is just as meaningless. in civilised societies, we can protect
animals from being abused through the legal framework of that society,
but whether we choose to call them "natural rights" or anti-animal
abuse laws is moot. choose whatever flowery term you wish, it won't
stop animal abuse until such time as the whole world agrees on a
standard set of laws and vigouressly polices those laws, independant
of boundaries.
