Here is what Plato thought;
On Plato
We must begin by "sending out into the country all the inhabitants of
the city who are more than ten years old, and by taking possession of
the children, who will thus be protected from the habits of their...

If we didn't compete through sports we would compete by the other thing.
The other thing for which there are no rules, no appreciative applause for
the runner-up. Sport allows us to test ourselves, or form allegiances
without recourse to the other thing. Passionate motivated motiving, and
yet fair. Sowing the idea of fairness. Making that ethos a valuable part
of our competitive spirit.
The best of competition has us acknowledging the rules, competing by the
same standards for the same prize, recognizing it takes two to make the
en devour worthy.

The chicks have beautiful ends all right. Not sure sure if their ends
are noble :)
One noble purpose of sports competition is to conduct warfare without
destruction and killing. Another is to teach youngsters the kind of
"grit" required to live positively and successfully ... an aspect of
the development of a healthy psyche. Another is to develop leadership
and cooperation ...to learn to be a good follower as well as leader.

to each their noble ends.
OK, you gotta be serious..
the noble end to sports, as I see it, is to maintain and serve an ideal.
