Boulder Lecture: "Why No One Needs to Fear Spending Eternity in Hell"

Author: Diana Hsieh

** Please forward this announcement to anyone you think might be
interested in attending. Thanks! **

Many religions claim that sinners will be punished by God for an
eternity in hell. Should we fear that awful fate?

* What: Lecture on "Why No One Needs to Fear Spending Eternity in
Hell" by Professor Wes Morriston

* When: Thursday, February 21st, 7:30 - 9:00 pm

* Where: Old Main Chapel, CU Boulder

In June 2007, the Gallup Poll reported that eighty six percent of
Americans believe in God, and that sixty nine percent believe in
hell. Dr. Morriston will argue that if you believe in God, you
probably should not believe in hell -- at least not if you think that
God is very good and hell is a very bad place to be. Along the way,
he'll be taking a critical look at one popular attempt to explain why
a just and loving God would allow many people to spend eternity in
hell -- an application of the so-called free will defense to the
special case of hell.

I'm not sure exactly what this guys arguments are, but ...
If you believe God is Just and loving then

1.) What does "just" mean? I assume that mean one is pre-disposed to
justice. I.E. Wrongs must be righted.
2.) How does Gods love play a role? Love means that God would do
something that we did no deserve (provide a way for the wrong to be
righted).

Ironically the idea that God is just and loving come from the Bible.
If you believed these two things, it only makes sense that you believe
the rest (e.g. hell).

If you don't believe in the Bible, then the characteristics of that
god (i.e. loving and just) must be supported by some other mean.
Which is besides the point, because it appears that this conference is
target towards those who are pre-disposed to believe the Bible and yet
are susceptible to heresy.

Why? Why would it be "just" to punish finite sins committed by
finite, imperfect beings with everlasting punishment? What's "just"
about that?

There's *nothing* loving about the biblical god. The whole tale is
one of blood and guts, and is predicated on the ancient mid-eastern
notion that blood can be some kind of a "payment."

Well, I've read the bible, and it *does* claim that. However, it in
no way demonstrates that.

Of course not - There's no evidence that hell or god(s) exist.
