There is some hope for more. Look up Jampolsky, "Change your mind, change
your life". From what I can tell, he thinks the ancient Stoic principle
that you can improve you mind, is, in fact, true. And the Stoics were
correct, in that it requires both physical and mental exercise.
But Jampolsky draws in the brain scans, biochemistry of the mind, and
how that is affected by diet and environment to dramatically improve the
chance of actually learning to be more sane, and therefore happier.
I'm working with some women who have careers in healthcare, who see most
of what he has to say, but approach relationships, which also have a
huge impact on happiness and sanity, from a case management standpoint.
They recognize that sometimes a man just needs to get laid. Jampolsky
cant deal with that. He's a dude.
They also recognize the neurosis that comes out of Christian dogma-
guilt tripping, and an intolerance of ambiguity exemplified by dividing
the world into good vs evil. Its more complicated than that.
