If whatever phenomenon varies in any manner whenever another
phenomenon varies in some particular manner, is either a cause or an
effect of that phenomenon, or is connected with it through some fact
of causation, how would an increase or decrease of capitalism cause
the humanities to vary?

Please see the Morrill Act of mid 19th century regarding state
universities furthering by Uncle Sam
Every State in the U.S. has at least one major university composed of
several "colleges" or "schools"
These colleges may involve separate buildings or facilities for
underhgraduate and graduate
business
education
agriculture
arts and sciences or liberal arts & humanities
engineering
veternary medicine
medicine
law

They are funded by state taxes derived from taxable income. Some funds
come from government grants which are also tax supported. Some funds
come from private industry.

The trend in State universities is to move toward a business model in
which various veiled strategies (eg: bullshit marketing) are used to
rationalize expenditures. Sometimes, not always, they attempt to use
what they call Outcome Based allocations of funds.
Humanities do not evince cost-effectiveness when one uses business
metrics (which in turn are short-term measures, not long-term), so the
trend is to merge Humanities into fields which can show (apparent)
effectiveness.
This comes under the guise of cross-disciplinary efforts. It is a way to
virtually replace the leadership of Humanities with that of a discipline
more susceptible to hard, short-term metrics.
By now you might guess that I live in that paradigm called the State
university.

Don't worry, they are still run by a rabid, leftist cabal.

The humanities haven't disappeared. Now that the majority
of college students are women, they are even bigger than
ever.

The departments that ballooned are the College of Education, and Nursing
in particular where women were always over-represented. As far as the
sciences go, there is a significant increase in the number of women
there, much of it due to the liberal attitude of this generation of
parents in non-European countries who encourage their daughters to
become educated. So the overall effect of more women could be said to
further diminish the Humanities. The effect is compounded by the power
of the sciences compared to the humanities in the university politic.
