I have just made a mess of my system (again!) and done a fresh install. The
installer set up my 2008.1 DVD-ROM as a source.
The fuiles exctracted on a previous occasion are still in /var/ftp. It is
much more convenient to use those, because I am always changing something.
Do I need to take any special precautions about changing back?
Doug.

More like four years?

The whole thing is very outdated. Even the name and numbering of the
distro has changed: the current version is Mandriva 2008.1
You'll now find the distro's web site at < http://www.mandriva.com/> - and
this newsgroup has been superceded by alt.os.linux.mandriva where you'll
find many more people hanging out than here.
I've cross-posted this reply to the new group, and set the Followup-To
there as well.

Hello,
My dedicated server provider (OVH) doesn't propose Mandriva (only
Ferdora, Ubuntu etc...).
I think it's possible to install a distribution then migrate to another
one on a dedicated server (without physical access to the computer).
I've done some tests using VMWare :
. on the dedicated server, I've Fedora installed with 2 partitions
(ext2) : / (/dev/sda1) and /home (/dev/sda2)
. umount /home partition then delete/recreate (or resize) smaller one
. create a new partition (/mnt/mandriva on /dev/sda4)
. on an other machine, install Mandriva then create an archive of the system
. unarchive Mandriva's insall on the new partition
. chroot on Mandriva's partition (/mnt/mandriva)
. update fstab
. update grub then reboot

At the time I installed this (yestersday), I had not yet seen the advice to
choose 'custom' as my desktop selection, so please read my comments in that
light. Also thank you for your advice on that (beta 2) thread. The comments
below were also poste to the Mandriva forum on http://forum.eeeuser.com/.
I upgraded my 901 from 2009.0 beta 2 to Mandriva 2009.0 rc1 today. Something
must have gone wrong because neither wired nor wireless Internet would work
at first. I reinstalled kernel-2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc5.2.1mnb and got them
to work again. I had trouble installing Adobe Reader via Firefox. In the
end I downloaded it and installed from the Download folder.
Skype though could not find any web cam devices, A big disappointment for my
wife who had used it under Xandros until recently. As Xandros had no
trouble, this strikes me as a bit remiss.

I have 2 2008.1 x86_64 systems, one with usb mouse one with ps2 mouse, both
are annoying to use. The mouse constantly sticks as you move it. I notice
that in a console gpm doesnt seem to stick at all.
Has anyone else been experiencing this, drives me right off the deep end.
Thanks,
Eric

Why would my son playing the Flash games at this site
http://www.poptropica.com/ cause my computer to spontaneously
turn off?
I thought it might be heating up the CPU too much, because the
CPU goes up to 90%% as shown by top. So, I installed Ksensors and
monitored all the voltages and temperatures while playing Poptropica
stuff. The machine did shut off, but all of the sensors were quite
happy.
Then I thought it might be memory trouble. So, I installed memtest86+
and let it run for a very, very long time. No errors were reported.
The game runs in Flash 9 running inside the most up to date Firefox 2.
OK, what gives? What could be toxic about that website to my Mandriva
2008.0 distribution running on a 600MHz Duron with 512MB of RAM?
Thanks.....

Because K3B has a bug, and because Linux Magazine spoke in glowing terms
about Brasero, I used Brasero to back up my Windows system. All files and
directories were saved with 8.3 filenames in capitals. K3B would never
have done that. I specifically did not use Nero under Windows (the only
really satisfactory solution) because running it under Windows, some files
are in use and unavailable.
What did I do wrong?
Doug.
