volume of gnome sounds in 2008.1

Hi,

I'm trying to work out how to configure Gnome on 2008.1 so that it suits me.

I've found the master volume control, and I've found where to select the WAV
files that are played at various system events, but no way to selectively
reduce the volume of system events other than selecting a quieter WAV file
(or none).

The default configuration gives a very load log in announcement and very
quiet movies and TV.

Any suggestions?

  Datacard freezes laptop

Author: chris

Some time ago I subscribed to T-Mobile's mobile broadband service, and
got the Option Globetrotter Fusion+ PCMCIA card. Worked great with
Windows, but never got it working with Mandriva. At the end of the
contract I went for their USB modem (E220) and that has worked fine with
Linux (and now I've finally unlocked it so I can use foreign SIMs).

However, I'd really like to get the old card working, as it's a neater
solution. The problem is this: I can boot the laptop with the car in
place, and it flashes blue to show it's getting a signal. I then go into
Mandriva Control Centre and set up a GPRS connection (card detected OK)
and it says it's set up OK. However, a minute or two later the whole
laptop freezes, and only power-off can rescue it.

Any ideas for what's causing this?

Chris

KDE dies when <stuff> is run

There was a discussion here a while ago about things like Wine killing
KDE and dumping one back to the session login screen. The consensus
opinion seemed to be that it was related to the video drivers.

I asked over in the comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine group, and was told
that I needed to install libglide3, and to try running glxinfo.

libglide3.so.3 was in package Glide_V5, and glxinfo (among other things)
was in package mesa-utils, so I installed both of those. Running
glxinfo kills KDE and dumps me back to the session login.

Can someone please explain for me how to get this stuff working under
Mandriva 2008.0, with the vmlinuz-2.6.22.19-desktop-2mdv kernel?

BTW, I'm a nfg at sysadmin stuff, so a how-to would be appreciated!

Logitech wirless keyboard doesn't work now

I have just had to re install the system bootloader onto my Mandriva
2008 system due to a re install of a MS windows product, and now my
Logitech wireless keyboard is very unresponsive, ie it is very slow to
respond.
Before Mandriva boots up, the keyboard is ok, as it is in windows, but
after the desktop has loaded, I have to really press down on any key to
get it to appear. This is the same in any program I use including trying
to type in google.

Any ideas please?
Thanks
