Problem mounting NFS shares using MCC

Author: Chris Roy-Smith
Date: May 12, 2008 19:13

Hi all,
running mandriva 2008.0 free on both machines.
I am experiencing problems trying to get NFS shares to work.
Using MCC "Share your data through NFS" i think that I am creating NFS
shares, (the dialogue shows the desired share).
Entries as follows:

Share Directory Hosts wildcard general options
/home/chris/Downloads *.home.invalid no_subtree_check,async

/media/cdrom *.home.invalid no_root_squash, async,
secure,no_sub_tree_check,ro

When I then go to another machine and try to "use NFS shares" using MCC,
and "Search servers", no list of servers is shown.

The help page says that it works the same as SMB mount points.

All help appreciated

  WiFi Printer?

Author: Gail Koontz
Date: May 12, 2008 17:36

I think I would like to buy a Brother HL-4070CDW color laser printer. One
attraction is that it will do duplex printing, and I do a lot of that.
Another is that it has WiFi capability. It seems to have good Linux drivers
and lots of good reviews.

But there is something I just don't understand. I am afraid this is going to
sound like a really stupid question, and it probably is, but how does the
printer know who it is? We run our Tivos with WiFi with no problem, but they
are really computers running Linux, and part of the setup allows us to set
the addresses as 192.168.1.x. How do you do that with a printer?

I'll be glad to read anything that will answer the question. I just haven't
found the right thing yet. Can someone steer me in the right direction?

And does anyone have any opinions good or bad about this printer?

TIA!

For what it's worth, I tried our new camera on our desktop computer
running Mandriva 2007.0. digiKam found a camera, but couldn't operate
it. 'lsusb' produced this

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 04a9:317a Canon, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

I never did get it to work.

I tried the new camera on an HP laptop running Mandriva 2008.1 (aka
Mandriva 2008 Spring). digiKam again found the camera, but this time
everything works fine. It looks like a modern version of the operating
system combined with a modern version of digiKam is fine. I'm not sure
how modern the Linux software needs to be.

FYI.....

Prog to handle DVD with menu?

Author: Maurice Batey
Date: May 12, 2008 08:57

Is there a program that can handle the playback of a DVD that
has a menu?

I've tried kaffeine, kplayer, lindvd, mplayer, and ogle, but none
shows the DVD menu.

(Some found the soundtrack in the chapters, but none showed
any video).

(The Dvd is a home 'family' DVD, made via Pinnacle Studio 10
under WinXP.)

Tips And Tricks To Buying A Digital Camera

Author: tionazt
Date: May 12, 2008 07:27

Technology is changing fast and not everyone can adopt quickly and
welcome the changes. Believe it or not, but there are those who have a
problem accepting emails even today though it has become the primary
mode of communication. The usage of PDA's to store memos and notes is
even less. It comes as no surprise thus that buying a digital camera
is gaining acceptance slowly. Most people still prefer a film-based
model and sift over only if they have to.

Most people who plan on buying a digital camera start off startled as
they see the picture quality it can give from someone else's digital
camera. So they decide on buying a digital camera to get the same
quality snaps. Plus, a digital camera is very convenient as there is
no need for film rolls anymore. So remembering the rolls and what
snaps are on them are on their way out. Storing conventional snaps can
also become a problem as they tend to get lost and destroyed. Buying a
digital camera solves all these problems.

it might be doing?

Several netbios packets filtered

192.168.0.2:25330 to 84.188.112.14:139
192.168.0.2:25330 to 80.199.53.26:139

  Web-Cam issue

Author: Alan Secker
Date: May 12, 2008 05:26

For some time I have been trying to get Skype 2.0.0.xx beta to properly
resolve images from my QuickCam Pro 5000. Its video test option gives me a
band of real video across the top of the window, the balance being noise.

KdeTV gives a perfect picture. The driver is the default of Mandriva Spring
2008.1.

On the assumption that this is never going to be resolved, I would like to
know of a reasonably priced web-cam that will do the job.

Mandriva 2008 Spring and Pan Newsreader

Author: JTJersey
Date: May 12, 2008 05:25

Pan newsreader had been working well for me since version 2006, but in
2008 it reverted back to not rendering large binaries properly. There was
a thread about this back when Mandriva 2008 was released. As far as I
know Pan's problem was never resolved in the 2008 release and in my case
that annoyance continues. Does anyone know if Pan renders binaries
properly in this latest Mandriva release?
