I would go ahead an re-enable it with X running, and then restart X, or
possibly reboot, just to ensure every thing is starting ok. Also a
guaranteed way to kill anything already using the sound system.

My WAG:
# cat /etc/sysconfig/pulseaudio
# Set the below variable to suit your needs.
# Possible values are:
# personal Start a personal pulseaudio server per-user (recommended)
# system Start a system wide daemon (not yet implemented)
# none Don't start pulse
#
# NB For the system wide daemon, users need to be in the group pulse-access.
#
PULSE_SERVER_TYPE=personal
# Set the various arguments to the daemon here
# This defaults to:
# --log-target=syslog for "personal"
#PULSE_ARGS=

I don't have a recent Mandr* distro on this machine, and the sound chip on
this machine is different from yours. In addition, I'm also having a
problem here with the KDE notifications and /artsd,/ which also seems bound
to use the null device now.

Using Kuickshow 0.8.13, if I drop a photo folder onto it and
select 'Slide Show', it just shows the 1st image and stops.
Only if I first select one of the images, and then select Slide
Show does the slideshow show all of them.
(In its settings, the 'Start with current image" option is not
ticked, which - according to the Help - means 'start with the
1st one').
The SO gets a bit confused with this, and I'm blowed if I can
get it to behave as it should.
Suggestions, anyone, please?

Although not Mandriva-Specific, this problem is typical of those that affect
the take up of Linux.
I have just been trying to upload a form representing the Accounts of a
dormant company, called a DCA. I get to the submit point after twice
entering an 11 character authentication code and get an error message
telling me there is an SSL error and to enter a command string into a
terminal. I did so and when invited pressed a key to signify acceptance and
was advised that 'a Certificate had been successfully installed'
Back I go to the Submit button and the same thing happens again. I call
Companies House who eventually get hold of someone who is Internet savvy
who tells me it is probably the firewall on my PC. "I don't have a firewall
on my PC". 'Ah then its the firewall on your modem-router".
The firewall is 'on' in my Linksys WAG54GS but I can find only a block
on 'Anonymous Internet Requests'. I have never had any kind of problem with
access before so I'm trapped in a Murphy's second Law syndrome.
Just a rant. I'll go back to cocoa tins and string.
