Hi I'm a Ubuntu 7.10 user and I am looking for an email client that will
send and receive Email under Ubuntu Gnome desktop.

I was doing fine with Mozilla Thunderbird v1.5? and upgraded to
v2.0.0.14. It was compiled for another version of Linux. It was set up
correctly and would not send the emails.

Can anyone tell me how to download apt-get source code complete with
dependencies? And tell me how to compile this code. I'd like to stay
with either Evolution or Mozilla Thunderbird if that is possible.

Your kind assistance is greatly appreciated.

Wishing you: Peace, Love and Joy

Dedicated server offering debian in Canada -- anything but iweb!

Author: Jason Maur

Hey all,

Anyone have any recommendations for a hosting company
that offers dedicated servers that run debian near
Montreal, Canada?

I'm currently with iweb.ca. Although they're cheap,
the level of service is awful. I asked for a simple RAM
upgrade 3 weeks ago, and nothing has happened. My account
manager won't even return my calls or e-mails, and my
"Complaints to management" are being marked as "resolved"
even though nobody has contacted me and no action has been
taken.

I'm quite disconcerted with this company. A five-year-old
could upgrade RAM quicker.

The kicker is that they charge a monthly fee of $25/month
for the RAM. Renting out RAM? Yikes...

Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev hdc.

I just moved a (working) harddisk from Ubuntu8.04 to my Debian(2.6.22-3-686)
pc.

When I want to mount the harddisk I get:

************************************************************
# mount -t ext3 /dev/hdc /media/hdc
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

  Video problems

Author: bjjl

I have nothing but trouble with video on the new Ubuntu/Debian 8.04 and
the Ultimate Edition 1.8 64bit. There is no way to change the screen
resolution from 640x480 or 800x600. I tried using Envy in the "system
tools" menu. I installed all the driver versions nothing changed.

Tried all the package manager files. Tried the restricted drivers screen
also, nothing. Someone said there is screen resolutions in the xorg.conf
with and * beside the resolution you want. I looked there and nothing
like that in my xorg.conf file.

What is strange is that if I install Ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10 I just have to
enable restricted drivers and everything automatically goes to 1024x768.
All in one simple step. I have been messing with these new releases for
days.

Card is an Asus GeForce 6600gt 256Meg DDR2. It is in a test machine that
I have installed PCLinuxOS, Linux Mint, Debian 4.0, Ubuntu 7.10,
Ultimate 1.7 and I never had a video problem with any of them. I guess
the simple answer is go back to the old and forget the new. I'm just
trying to find out why they made it so hard in the new releases.

Hi,

I want to disable the touchpad on my laptop.
The touchpad is currently working fine, but it just gets in my way, when I
using the keyboard.
I have the synaptics driver installed on my system and have inserted the
following in my xorg.conf

--- snip (xorg.conf) ---
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
Option "SHMConfig" "on"
EndSection
--- end snip ---

Changed from KDE to Gnome (?)

Author: Henk Oegema
Date: May 20, 2008 03:26

I've been using Debian KDE for quite some time now as a telephone server
(Asterisk)

Yesterday my server was down. I was expecting a power problem.
So i tried to switch the server on, and yes the system came up again.

But.....to my big surprise, the desktop had changed (??)
Now their was Gnome i.s.o. KDE

How can this happen?

(nobody touched the server while this happened)

  (Debian) Grep documentation?

Author: Felix Karpfen
Date: May 19, 2008 13:36

Running "grep --help" includes the following output:

| Regexp selection and interpretation:
| -E, --extended-regexp PATTERN is an extended regular expression
| -F, --fixed-strings PATTERN is a set of newline-separated strings
| -P, --perl-regexp PATTERN is a Perl regular expression

It is my current understanding, that these differ in what is considered
a metacharacter.

However, I find the "man grep" comments relating to the differences
between "basic grep". the offered (GNU 2.5) and other versions
of "egrep" too cryptic.

Is there any other relevant documentation that provides greater detail?

  Weak SSL keys and CUPS

Author: Günther Schwarz

While I do understand how to check and replace OpenSSH keys affected by
the recent dsa-1571 issue and also fixed cfengine (easy: my keys are
from 2003 :-) ), I'm still puzzled what to do with my print server.
CUPS uses a self-generated SSL certificate for encrypted https
connections to the web administration interface.
Is this the key stored in /etc/cups/ssl/?
Is there a simple way to check the integrity of this key?
If in doubt can I simply delete it and restart the server?

  crontab - abnormal behaviour

Author: Volker Lücken
Date: May 15, 2008 02:22

Hello,

I've got the following entry in the root crontab:
0 */4 * * * cd /home/asService/ && sh asService

With this line, asService should be executed every four hours, but on my
lenny/sid debian server, it happens only at 12, 16 and 20 o'clock, not
at 0, 4 and 8... Who has an idea what could lead to this behaviour?

Thanks in advance!
