I changed the preferences on Iceweasel to be the primary browsers and now
I can't seem to get any of my browsers to work when I click on web links
in my email.
Any ideas on how I might fix this?
thank you
Kevin

I would like to install the IE browsers, Opera, Firefox etc for
developmental testing.
The instructions for IE state that I should first install this package:
#apt-get install wine cabextract
However I get an error message that states:
krraleigh-PC:/home/kevin# apt-get install wine cabextract
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package wine is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package wine has no installation candidate
any suggestions on how I should proceed?
thank you

Hi all
I have installed Apache-2 the "Debain way" for the first time. It went
basically ok, but I can't get PHP to login from an external LDAP server.
The script generates "Fatal error: Call to undefined function
ldap_connect() in SCRIPT on line NR".
What I did was starting from a minimal Debian installation ran
apt-get install apache2
cd /etc/apache2/mods-enabled
ln -l ../modes-available/authnz_ldap.load .
and restarted Apache.
phpinfo() shows me under Modules loaded:
core mod_log_config mod_logio prefork http_core mod_so mod_alias
mod_auth_basic mod_authn_file mod_authnz_ldap mod_authz_default
mod_authz_groupfile mod_authz_host mod_authz_user mod_autoindex
mod_cgi mod_dir mod_env util_ldap mod_mime mod_negotiation mod_php5
mod_setenvif mod_status
What have I missed?
Aron

I loaded debian as a second operating system
First is windows
The first time I did this it wiped out the mbr and I wasn't able to boot
either
debian or windows. So I reinstalled both windows "first" , and debian
second.
This time I did not load the grub loader and received a fatal error.
When I boot my machine windows gives me the option to load either windows
or linux. When I choose linux I get a command interface with:
grub>
only when I tried to display any of the logs that were created when debian
was loaded but
all I get is error messages. I typed help and was given a screen of choices,
but I don't see
anything in the help menu that will allow me to get into the debian system.
I read that
I need to login before anything can happen, but I don't get a login screen.
Can you advise?
Kevin

Hi all,
The description of the xinit package says:
xinit and startx are programs which facilitate starting an X server, and
loading a base X session.
... please could somebody explain to me why this necessitates a dependency
on cpp?
Many thanks,
CC

I recently installed Lenny and gFTP 2.0.18. gFTP doesn't seem to support
passwords longer than 4 characters. Anyone else see this problem? Any
work around?

I am getting ready to partition my drives for debian, but there are
a few things that I don't quite understand.
1) I was told to setup my drives as such:
/root 250mb
/usr 4-6gig
/var 2-3 gig
/tmp 200mb
/home 4gig
/swap 2 gig
I plan to run a dual boot of windoze and Debian
right now I have 2 partitions C:/ 30 gigs D:/ 650 gigs
I was thinking that I should setup
C:/ 30 gigis then Debian 15gigs divided as above then win data
2) I need primary paritition for C:/ and Debian/?
Do I need to put usr/ var/ tmp/ home/ and swap/ in the extended partitition?
Do I create one partition for Debian and let it partition the 15gigs that I
will allot?

I'm trying to install a very minimal system on a 540mb
drive to be moved to a laptop that doesn't have a CD.
I've partitioned as follows:
/boot - 10mb
/ - 350mb
swap - 30mb
/usr - 150mb
I'm using the net install CD and everything goes well
until the first boot of the installed system. I get:
GRUB loading stage1.5.
GRUB loading, please wait
Error 2
http://www.uruk.org/orig-grub/errors.html says:
2 : "Selected disk doesn't exist"
This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full filename
refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by
the BIOS in the system.
