Let's not fail to mention a fortunate few people. The state of
Oregon has no sales tax, although it has an income tax. Those who
live just inside Washington near the Oregon-Washington state line
(mostly the Columbia River) and who work in Washington pay no
income tax and are able to do their shopping in Oregon, which has
no sales tax.

I trust our ignorant Kiwi will have a pithy comment about that.
At that point someone can also tell him of more complications,
e.g., If the Washingtonian works in Oregon he will pay Oregon
income tax, which will be a withholding amount on each paycheck.

I haven't lived in the state of Washington for 25 years now, but
I seem to recall that Washington actually considers sales tax due
on items purchased in Oregon, but has no practical way to assess
and collect the tax, save on certain big ticket items such as
automobiles; an auto bought in Oregon and registered in
Washington will be charged the tax at the time of registration.
