I never got into rifles much; other than a Ruger 10-22 with a Bushnell
Custom .22 scope I bought new in 1976. Due to its year of manufacture,
the inscription, MADE IN THE 200TH YEAR OF AMERICAN LIBERTY, is
stamped on the barrel.
I used to like squirrel hunting with that because shooting squirrels
in the head-only was more sporting than using any caliber of shotgun,
especially 12-gauge (which is ridiculous).
I shot one deer in my lifetime - killed with a slug fired from my
12-gauge shotgun - and I never cared for that sport ever since.
Several things that bother me about deer hunting is all the drunken
buffoons out in the woods and, knotheads illegally road-shooting.
My s-i-l's brother was shot in the chest by another "hunter" one year.
What troubles me is that the s-i-l's bro was driving his pick-up truck
on a paved county road a few minutes after the official end of a deer
hunting day and a bullet came through his windshield and messed him up
quite a it. He was hospitalized for a long time.
Inside the bullet wound were fibers from the heavy wool shirt he was
wearing as well as glass fragments from the windshield and whatever
other foreign objects, in addition to the bullet, entered his chest.
He survived and lived for decades afterward, but, that incident helped
put deer hunting in perspective for me.
Although deer are certainly plentiful on my property and in the
surrounding area, and neighbors successfully hunt on my acreage, I
don't care for venison and no longer hunt 'speed-beef.'
Doubly troubling is hearing shotgun and rifle blasts that originate on
the gravel roadway about 100' from my house during any particular
hunting season.
Lots of boneheads illegally road-hunt, especially during bird season,
and rifle reports are heard nearby during deer season (from other
folks than conscientious neighbors). Plus, with the real
kook-a-loonies outside with guns, I fear my black dogs may be shot by
shitheads thinking they are cub bears or some other lame excuse.
