Re: Re:Who surfs the site from work??
<< My boss is a total low life jerk slave driver who underpays me and
won't give me a freakin' break!
Wait a minute, I'm self employed. Nevermind. >>
I can relate, having once done a truckin' brokerage bizness out of my
house. That was "back in the day" and I ran circles around my
competition by simply using multiple computers to run a database that I
wrote which was state of the art and made my competitors look silly.
What I did at the time took a mini computer and a staff of people for my
competition and I was able to run my stuff by myself on a decent PC
tower unit, a laptop, and still had time to channel surf on my home
television. Cartoon Channel was just starting up back then and I'd
regularly shoot the breeze with those guys about programming for us
"adults" working out of our homes
Today I work as the DP Geek for a small company. Other than that I frown
on streaming audio (it slows down our network when you can just as
easily bring a radio in) we don't have much in the way of policies as to
what one can and cannot do. It's a good group of folks, most of us
older, requiring little supervision. I've been here for 5 years and am
pretty much a junior in terms of seniority.
So reasonable surfing at work? We don't really care. I had one guy (no
longer here) that was into porn and we would have discouraged that if we
had known. Other than that we have a group of very nice church ladies
who send Christian church-related jokes back and forth. Not a big deal.
I do frown on all of the little utilities however - extra fonts,
Weatherbug, and so forth. All of that stuff brings in spyware and
generally slows things down.
I might add as an aside that it has come to my attention that my two
Real Life Stalkers have been monitoring this board. In the past hey have
complaining bitterly that I make them look like fools when I am in my
office; since they are a couple of working class stiffs and don't have
access at their workplace they seem to think it's unfair.
What they don't realize is that in this day of VPN and Remote Desktop is
that I can control every machine in our office remotely from my home or
my laptop. My laptop has a Verizon high speed access card in it so I can
literally call up anywhere that I can get a cellular signal.
Conversely, I can call home and control the systems there from my office.
At home I have 3 computers, 2 of which I use as servers, running
underneath my desk, all connected to a 4-way KVM switch.
At my office I have one main workstation and on another desk multiple
computers connected to another 4-way KVM switch.
Theoretically I am on call 24/7. I regularly run diagnostic routines on
the server from my house or from the road when I am traveling over the
weekends. And I have been known to work some weird hours - get in late,
stay late at night, sometimes take a few days off and make it up on
weekends or by working at home. Among my responsibilites are disaster
prep and that means that if I am in town and the burglar or fire alarm
goes off then I may have to schlep to the office in the middle of the
night. We are the owners of a chunk of this complex which is an office
condo development and I am pretty much the go-between with our tenants
and all the building issues. I could write a short book on the fire
alarm issues that we had some time ago
Moral of the story - in this day and age for many of us personal
computer usage and bizness computer usage begins to blur. You can't tell
where someone is at and what machines they are using unless you REALLY
need to know or want to spend the time to look hard at their multiple
workstations. And when you work weird hours you catch up as best you can.
Also, for those of us that multi-task (I can run big print jobs and so
forth from multiple computers and have plenty of time on my hands) it's
not too tough to work in a little eBay watching on the side.
And some people (including my not-too-bright stalkers) just don't
understand that.
The most restrictive place as far as computer usage where I ever worked
was a charity that dealt with foster children, so they were
understandably sensitive to pornography issues and so forth. I wasn't a
tech geek there - I also have a degree in accounting and was
straightening out their billing issues at that time - but I *NEVER*
surfed from there. After my clerk left it came out that she had stolen
my log on ID and password and was spending quite a bit of time surfing
Hollywood celebrity sites.
Moral of that story is that you can have all the monitoring software in
the world and all of the policies that you want, but if you don't have
anyone who bothers to look at the logs or enforce the policies then you
are pounding your money down the proverbial rat hole.

"drowning rats" is so ironic because,
fatfuck-aching-rat-toothedjohnny has experience with
"pounding [everyone's scammed] money down the proverbial rat hole"
