Most are so poorly insulated that the snow melts off. Proper insulation can
have snow build-up all winter long if the weather stays cold. Partial melts
and refreezes drives water up under shingles, causing wet attics, ceilings,
etc.
I once read of a house built in central Wisconsin where it gets well below
zero. The owner had it insulated with R-30 on all six sides. His family
simply living there was all it needed for heat. His first winter there he
burned a total of four chunks of firewood in his airtight stove, and that
was because they went away a few times and let the house cool off.
Super insulation more than pays for itself. That can't be said for any
other building material or house feature....
