Support for Cruel Regimes Breeds Terrorism
January 31, 2008 01:00 PM EST
What have former Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi
Arabia, and Turkey in common besides being Islamic? A few adjectives will
sum it up. They are anti-democratic, intolerant, repressive, brutal,
despotic, violent, militaristic, fascist, and criminal, they are states of
terror and a real threat to world peace. The causes or the common
denominator for all that can to a very large extent also be summed up in a
few words: US/Western strategic interests in the Middle East.Claiming to be
the civilization of reason, freedom, democracy, human rights, of justice,
the West has in fact been the key supporter of states of terror and crime,
and the cause of modern jihadist terrorism. During the Cold War, it
continued the divide-rule-and-exploit game of the colonial European powers
under the rhetoric of fight against communism by creating and supporting so
called moderate or secular Muslim governments; following 9/11 the same
strategy is now called "war on terror". The historical evidence shows that
the West, instead of giving open, official, unconditional support to genuine
democratic movements and parties that represent the peoples of the region,
has been playing one state against another with millions of innocent lives ...

Greek Cypriot Tennis pro Marcos Baghdatis racist chants from the
Hellas Fan Club "Baghdatis barbeque 2007" have highlighted his
membership of a right wing Racist "Club" of Greek Australian thugs
known as the HFC or Hellas Fan Club
These known hooligans are banned from even the proudly "Greek
Australian" soccer club South Melbourne FC and have been described to
the media by upstanding members of the Australian Greek Community as
nothing more than "common hooligans" and "Serial Pests" intent on
causing disruption, inciting ethnic, racial & religious hatred and
USING the media spotlight at sporting events as a soap-box for airing
their far-right extremist political views
In the controversial video clips, some of which are published here,
Greek Cypriot Tennis pro Baghdatis screams "TURKS OUT OF CYPRUS -
TURKS OUT OF CYPRUS" a deeply provocative and racially offensive
provocation of the indigenous "Turkish Cypriot" population native to
Cyprus

CYPRIOT JUDGE - EUROPEAN COURT
The Cypriot judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Loukis
Loukaides, who is retiring at the end of January, recommends to the
local political leadership to make the most of Court judgments,
relating to Cyprus, in the political arena.
Having served the Court for nine years, Loukaides carries with him a
lot of memorable moments, acknowledges the dissenting opinions of his
colleagues, which he says are always based on legal points, and
stresses the need to see Court decisions implemented, in particular
those concerning human rights violations by Turkey in Cyprus. He
believes that the rule of law applies in Cyprus where the judiciary, he
says, is independent and all governments respect human rights.
On the political front, Loukaides says that the solution in Cyprus must
be a unitary state where every Cypriot, irrespective of origin, will
enjoy the same rights: rule of law, democracy, human rights and
freedom.

2,300-Year-Old Wine-Carrying Ship Found Off Cyprus
Thursday, January 24, 2008
NICOSIA, Cyprus - Marine archaeologists will begin work in June to uncover
the sand-buried hull of a 2,300-year-old cargo ship thought to have been
ferrying wine from the Aegean island of Chios before it sank off Cyprus'
southern coast, researchers said Thursday.
The vessel, dating from the late Classical period (mid-fourth century B.C.)
is one of only a few such ships to have been found so well-preserved, said
University of Cyprus visiting marine archaeologist Stella Demesticha.
"The shipwreck looks very promising about shedding light on the nautical and
economic history of the period in the east Mediterranean," Demesticha told
the Associated Press on Thursday.
The wreck rests on the seabed at a depth of 144 feet some 1 1/2 miles off
the island's southern coast.
Demesticha said the wreck was also unique because it lies at a depth that
divers can easily reach, unlike similar discoveries found in deeper waters.

BAGHDATIS - AMBASSADOR
Cyprus will mark 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue
with various events and has appointed Cypriot tennis champion Marcos
Baghdatis as its Ambassador for the year.
The Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, as the national
coordinating body for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008,
has submitted to the European Commission its strategic action plan and,
in cooperation with the European Institute of Cyprus, its final
proposal to co-fund this EU plan, a proposal which has already been
approved by the EU.
Speaking during a press conference on the occasion of the 2008 European
Year of Intercultural Dialogue, Minister of Education and Culture Akis
Cleanthous said Cyprus tennis champion Marcos Baghdatis has been
appointed as Ambassador of this Year for Cyprus, as a person who
embodies multiculturalism without forgetting his roots, his country and
his traditions.

Firebrand filmed with Baghdatis
Ben Doherty
January 18, 2008
VIDEOS circulating on the internet show Greek Cypriot tennis player Marcos
Baghdatis, an Australian Open crowd favourite, arm in arm with the alleged
ringleader of Tuesday night's tennis confrontation, chanting anti-Turkish
slogans.
Several clips on the YouTube video-sharing website show Baghdatis at a
barbecue hosted by the Hellas Fan Club, whose members were at the centre of
a violent clash with police at the tennis on Tuesday night. Unruly fans were
hit with capsicum spray and 10 people evicted from Melbourne Park.
It is not known when the barbecue was held, but several clips show Baghdatis
singing, with his arm around fan club president Chris Vlahogiannis.
Mr Vlahogiannis was capsicum-sprayed by police and arrested at the stadium
and is expected to be charged on summons with assaulting police and
resisting arrest. He has been banned from the rest of the Open.

BAGHDATIS - AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has advanced to the second round
of the Australian Open after defeating Thomas Johansson of Sweden with
7-6(0) 6-2 3-6 6-3.
According to the Australian Open website, Baghdatis, who lost to Roger
Federer in the 2006 Australian Open, is seeded 15 this year, has played
down the extent of a hamstring injury, declaring he will be fully fit
heading into a probable meeting with Marat Safin on Thursday. The
Cypriot athlete was forced to call for treatment on his left leg at the
start of the third set against Johansson, eventually recovering to take
the match in four.
After his largely impressive 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over the former
Australian Open champion, Baghdatis indicated the injury was not as bad
as it first appeared.
