VH/Roth Reunion in '07 Thoughts

First off, this isn't a done deal by any stretch. There is also strong
rumors that the Van Halen "tour" may just be the so-called "VH Family" thing
which would be Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang playing mostly instrumentals of both
classic VH tunes as well as new intrumental compositions. This lineup would
(obviously) play 2,000 - 3,500 seat venues.

However, if a Roth reunion does indeed happen in the Spring of '07 as it's
thought, there is a lot of potential for a trainwreck of amazing
proportions.

First off, doing it without a new album to push or at least a couple new
songs is just plain lazy. All accounts indicate that there's at least half
a dozen near finished songs from the aborted 2000 album sessions that are
supposed to be "spectacular." Of course, there's supposed to be "10 albums
in the can" according to Eddie so who knows. I do think at least initially,
this tour would do as well and likely even better than the Motley Crue
reunion first did even if it's an obvious cash-grab like the Hagar reunion
tour was.

I agree with most of what you said. I don't think Eddie and Dave will
be able to get along with each other for an entire tour. The two
personalities have always clashed. If anything, I think Dave may pull
out of the tour when he realizes that he cannot deal with Ed.

I think it's also important that promoters wait before they put too
much money into the tour. The 2004 tour lost money because they put
too much money into the tour and even after grossing 50 million, they
lost money. For the CVH reunion, they should start out with
inexpensive venues and if ticket demand is high, then they can start
booking them in more prestige venues such as MSG.

If Eddie wants to have Wolfgang play a significant part in the tour,
then I don't think Dave will do it. I think Dave will protest it and
the whole thing will collapse.

I just have to add, that if Dave and Ed were to write some new
material, I think it would be some of the best stuff that Ed has
released since 96. Dave has always had a good songwriting chemistry
with Ed.

Actually, Mike *did* appear at the birthday bash.

They're talking about it because VH made some fantastic music in the
past.

They should release a new album before touring though.

The reason we got so much good stuff with Dave/Eddie was that
Dave controlled Eddie back then. Eddie won't let that happen
now and that's why you don't see a new album for the tour.
Without Dave in control you won't get good music from Eddie.

I think a Roth reunion is less likely than another Hagar reunion--hell,
even a CHERONE reunion. I don't think that EVH and DLR could stand
each other long enough to rehearse a tour, let alone complete one.

That said, given the state of EVH's technique and mental health (not to
mention hygiene), I don't know if it would even be worth seeing in the
first place. I mean, do you want to hear EVH fuck up song after song
because he can't make his fingers work anymore? Not me.

Besides, I think Captain Brown Teeth is permanently retired, except for
the odd House of Petals "jam."

You mean the clip where he's got magic marker writing all over his body
while he's smashing his guitar on the stage after playing some sort of
noisy, tuneless jam that was probably supposed to be a recognizable song?
Yeah, top notch.

I honestly don't know. My personal opinion is that in one way or another,
his head is fried, maybe from alcohol and drugs, maybe from whatever cancer
treatment he got in 2001. I do know that his playing during the '98 tour was
pretty much spot on and very tight even if his tone was a bit grating that
tour. However, his playing has clearly taken a major slide in the last 6
years or so.
