Is there a Santa Claus?
That was little Virginia's question, which served as the headline for
Francis Church's column in the New York Sun over a hundred years ago.
Unfortunately, this year, there's a question of whether Santa has a home to
return to, what with global warming threatening the polar ice cap under
Santa's home.
Although Al Gore didn't specifically mention Santa in his inflammatory
documercial, "An Inconvenient Truth" (now on DVD), the threat was obvious.
But before we speculate on Santa's fate, let's examine Al Gore's sincerity
in the movie and see if he's worthy of our trust: He introduces himself (and
his real agenda) with "I used to be the next president of the United
States."
To make sure we heard him, lest we miss his rabble-rousing call to arms, he
brings up the 2000 election a second time. Such comments were, predictably,
warmly received by an audience which had the exact look and demeanor of the
peanut gallery in an infomercial. He tries to put his childhood spent being
raised in a D.C. hotel in a positive light, so that we might actually
believe that he's not a limousine liberal.

This *opinion* is so full of errors, it's laughable. The writer talks
about some scenes from the movie as though he'd seen it. Then he makes
points which are directly addressed in the movie, so obviously, he hasn't.
I decided for the hell of it to look at one claim; chose the claim that
according to the wildlife fund, polar bear populations are increasing.
What a joke!
http://www.worldwildlife.org/polarbears/
"As the world's largest terrestrial carnivore, the polar bear is the
king of the great white north. It might come as a surprise then that
this majestic species faces an uncertain future: Climate change is
causing the disappearance of sea ice from which polar bears hunt their
prey. Research funded by WWF found that with less time on the ice to
hunt for food and store it leaves polar bears hungry and hinders
reproduction. If current climate trends continue unabated, polar bears
could become extinct by the end of this century."
I suspect the rest of his "facts" are equally ridiculous.

So how do you explain the ice caps melting on Mars?

I don't. I let the people who know what they're talking about do it.
Just out of curiosity, do you really think there is an explanation that
applies to both Earth and Mars, two very different planets?
Don't you have some NASCAR to watch?

The ice caps on Mars are seasonal! That's like saying why does the ice
on Altoona Lake in Wisconsin melt in July?!
The Martian ice caps are made of frozen CO2 (the ice is dry ice), the
planets air. During one season the south caps melt and the north caps
freeze, and mid year it's vice-versa.
I'm 99%% sure the same is NOT happening on earth (the ice caps
substantially melting and re-freezing on a yearly basis), so the
comparison of the two planets is illogical.
If you do a basic google search, you can read quite a bit more than I
posted, I'm sure. This is nothing new, so I'm sure there are reams of
science to read up on.

There is some seasonal melting on Earth, to be sure. Did you see March
of the Penguins? But there have been drastic changes, and unseasonal
melting... a huge ice sheet broke off from the arctic recently, etc.
