If Mike Love Hated SMILE So Much.....???

.....that what did he think of Smiley Smile?.....the bare bones
production.....the half finished songs.....the short running
time.......did he
really think the band was gonna get back on track with "She's Goin'
Bald" or
"Getting Hungry"? Wasn't that messin' with the system? Oh, Yeah,
Woody
Woodpecker Symphony....there's a #1 Hit for you.......Smiley Smile
turned out
to be LESS commercial than Smile ever would have beem......IMHO!

Plus.....the other day while driving thru the countryside......I saw a
corn
field that had been battered down by the ravages of winter........there
were
some crows flying over & dive bombing it........Guess what tune came
into my
head?

I, too, have puzzled over how Mike could've thought Smiley Smile was
more commercial than Smile would've been? Or how it fit into his "don't
--- with the formula" attitude? Or, for that matter, how ANY of the
BB's late 60's albums fit into that mold from his perspective? But I am
glad they made Smiley Smile. It's so brilliant in it's own
stoned-out-of-its-mind way. First time, too, that Carl sang a lot of
leads on a BB's album.

I don't think Mike believed Smiley Smile was any more commercial than
Smile would have been. But it wasn't just his decision. The Beach Boys
had to deal with the reality of the situation, which was that lots of
money had been spent on the Smile sessions, the BB's had promised to
deliver an album, Brian was probably in no condition to write new
material, and even if he was, there probably wasn't enough time. I
believe Smiley Smile was a stopgap move to get out a product and keep
some sort of momentum going for business reasons.

Of course an even better business decision would have been to help
Brian finish Smile. Even if it wouldn't have been a hit, it would still
be better than releasing scraps from an unfinished masterpiece and
becoming irrelevant.

Too bad the Boys couldn't have just made an album like Wild Honey
without Brian, giving him more time to finish Smile.

Don't know how they could've made Wild Honey without Brian, he co-wrote
most of the songs, and his voice was very prominent on the album. I
don't think the other guys could've written an entire album without him,
not in 1967.

In theory, Bruce should have been able to. In practice, look how many
people it took to write "How She Bugalooed it"...

I didn't mean that the Boys should have done the actual Wild Honey
album without Brian, but a similar type of low-fi album that would have
let them get their feet wet as songwriters and producers, and taking
the heat off Brian. I think if they wanted to they really could have
done it. Plus they didn't operate in a vacuum--there were music people
all around them that could have helped, and did help on later albums.
