As a Christmas special to fans of my musical poetry (!!!), that I
normally sing unaccompanied, I've recorded a new version of "Fairytale
of New York" with musical acompaniment supplied by a karaoke CD. I
have included the lyrics below; to download it in MP3 format, go to my
musical poetry page at
www.socialiststeve.me.uk/poetry.htm. [Clicking
on the link to the MP3 file should play or save it on most computers,
and this format should be suitable for iPods/MP3 players.]
The song is partly fictional, but is dedicated to an Indian activist
based in New York who sometimes calls herself "warcry". I have reason
to believe that she is in, or has been in, a psychiatric institution
in the USA that she has compared to Auschwitz concentration camp. For
more details, visit the Warcry Allies website I have set up to try to
help her situation, at
www.warcryallies.net. If anybody knows what has
happened to her, I'd be very grateful if somebody could let me know.
Happy Christmas to you all,
Steve.
Fairytale of New York
Inspired by Fairytale of New York âEURO" The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl,
Belly Of The Beast âEURO" Galaxia/Red Day and On My Own âEURO" Galaxia/Red
Day
Written by Steve Wallis
Version 2, 24/12/2007
Dedicated to Priya Reddy (warcry) of War Cry Cinema
YouâEURO(tm)re not at Guantánamo
Or even Abu Ghraib
An old man said to me:
âEUROOEYou will never see her againâEURO
But then I sang a song
And put it on the internet
I knew youâEURO(tm)d find out about it
And I dreamed about you
I am your lucky one
IâEURO(tm)d cross the ocean to free you
IâEURO(tm)ve got a feeling
Next yearâEURO(tm)s gonna be better for you and me
So Happy Christmas
I love you baby
We can create a better world
Where most of our dreams come true
TheyâEURO(tm)ve got cages with bars
TheyâEURO(tm)ve got nurses who are cold
The wind chills you to the bone
To stay alive youâEURO(tm)ve got to be bold
After I saw your videos
On a warm summerâEURO(tm)s night
I realised YouTube
Was waiting for us
I am handsome, you are pretty
You live in New York City
When our band finish playing
TheyâEURO(tm)ll howl out for more
An inmate was swinging
Some druggies were singing
Some even kissed in a corner
Before being locked up at night
The NYPD boys were using torture in every way
And you were desperate to hear of a release day
YouâEURO(tm)re sweet, youâEURO(tm)re neat
YouâEURO(tm)ve been forcefed junk
Lying there almost dead
On a drip in that bed
Those scumbags, those maggots
Some are bound to be braggers
When release day has passed
I hope itâEURO(tm)ll be your last
The NYPD boys are still using torture occasionally
And you have still not found out your release day
You are not just anyone
Nor am I just anyone
We can lead change together
Like birds of a feather
I kept writing songs for you babe
I wrote one called âEUROOEOn My OwnâEURO
IâEURO(tm)ve tried to make it alone
But built my dreams around you
The NYPD boys will have to stop using torture
As your case is highlighted after your release day
FREEDOM!
