The master of bPsychadelic Soul!
Norman Whitfield, 67, who co-wrote a string of Motown classics,
including "War" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," died Tuesday,
Sept. 16, according to a spokeswoman at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in
Los Angeles.

Norman Whitfield, songwriter and producer who co-wrote a string of
Motown classics including "War," "Just My Imagination (Running Away With
Me)" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," has died. He was 67.
A spokeswoman at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center said Whitfield died there
Tuesday. He suffered from complications of diabetes and had recently
emerged from a coma, The Detroit Free Press reported.
The New York-born Whitfield was a longtime Motown producer who during
the 1960s and '70s injected rock and psychedelic touches into the
label's soul music.
Many of his biggest hits were co-written with Barrett Strong, with whom
he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004. He and Strong
won the Grammy in 1972 for best R&B song for the Temptations' "Papa Was
a Rolling Stone."

I got bill wyman's [bass player for the rolling stones] 1976 album
called 'stone alone'. i have a record copy of it, but wanted it on CD. i
had to order it as an import as the US issue is out of print. it has the
ORIGINAL version of 'if you wanna be happy' on it! That song of course
was famously covered by Kid Creole and the Coconuts in the eighties. i
know it is favourite of yours. the seventies version is far better, of
course, as the 70's was a much cooler decade than the 80's [but you
already know that]. if i come across a realaudio copy of it, i will, of

WASHINGTON (AdAge.com) -- Politicians can finally get their MTV. After
declining political advertising since its inception in 1981, MTV is
reversing course.

The Viacom MTV Networks channel -- once known for round-the-clock music
videos and now home to a host of reality shows -- says it will now take
political ads, though only from political candidates and party political
committees, not from third parties.

As recently as the presidential primaries this year, MTV had refused all
political ads, even as it has heavily promoted its "Choose or Lose"
get-out-the-vote effort.

MTV's stance was opposite of that of its sibling MTV Networks channels. VH1,
Comedy Central and Spike TV were willing to accept political ads, according
to an MTV Networks official.

Now all the MTV Networks that aren't aimed at children will accept political
ads.

"MTV Networks will accept political advertising that is national in scope,
sponsored by a legally qualified candidate, a candidate's official campaign
committee, a nationally recognized political party, or the official
congressional campaign committee(s) of a nationally recognized party."

I just wish that MTV and its related networks didn't have such a monopoly on
music videos and ruined today's mainstream music. I have to admit that I
don't even know half of today music on American Top 40 charts because I am
so stuck in the 1980s.

Hey TBS, please consider bringing back (at least) the classic Night Tracks
shows since there are no basic cable channels airing '80s music videos?
It'll be a virtual guarantee to become a ratings hit since TBS is in many
more households than VH1 Classic. What does Time Warner have to lose
("loose" for all you misspellers out there)?
