Can anybody enlighten me as to the following problem with a possible
cause....
Battery is getting drained while riding and if the bike is not keep on a
trickle charger over night - after about three days of commuting (about 10
miles each way) the battery will be dead. Volt meter test shows about 13v at
idle and about 14v a little above idle speed.
Went to dealer and asked about it and they confirmed that the volt numbers
are good but said I should see if there is a amp draw by measuring between
the negative terminal and the neg wire lead but I'm...

Rectifier. For some reason I remember reading about VFR electrical problems
and the word "rectifier" coming up.
Anyway, there is certainly a VFR specific forum someplace, they could
probably add more info.
And if you have an alarm, disconnect that sucker. Mine kills the battery.
I never use it.

Yup. The rectifier/regulator converts the ac from the alternator to
dc and regulates it to a near constant value over the rev range. This
is how the battery gets recharged while riding. These units were known
to have problems on VFRs. Sounds like the likely culprit.

VFR owners said that the rectifier regulator has a sensor wire on it,
in addition to the normal three AC inputs and the positive and
negative lead.
The sensor wire has to go up to the instrument panel to sense voltage
there, instead of sensing voltage right at the battery.
VFR owners would eliminate as many connectors in the charging system
as they could, in order to get rid of high resistance connections.

Agreed; the rectifier is a known issue with the VFR, VTR, and
Blackbird. My 'bird has eaten one rectifier and one stator, the stator
having been taken out by the bad rectifier.
