Pentagon misled Congress about Peterson security, GAO report suggests
June 16, 2008 - 5:02PM
By PAM ZUBECK
THE GAZETTE
The Pentagon misled Congress about security issues at Peterson Air
Force Base, vastly understating the threat an attack would pose to
NORAD, before the nation's air and space defense command moved there
in May from Cheyenne Mountain, a classified document suggests.
Military leaders reported to Congress on March 3 that a Systems
Effectiveness Assessment of Peterson's Building 2, where the nation's
homeland security nerve center is located, identified "several
physical security problems."
The assessment actually was more pointed and pessimistic, saying that
"the existing security system at Peterson AFB supporting Building 2
would fail if attacked by even a low-level threat."

Editor's note: WND columnist Jerome R. Corsi conducted an exclusive in-
depth interview with Col. Tom Muir, U.S. Army, deputy operations
officer for Command Center Operations for NORAD, the North American
Aerospace Defense Command, and USNORTHCOM, the United States Northern
Command.
Part I of the interview focuses on the rearrangement of command
facilities in Cheyenne Mountain and at Peterson Air Force Base that
have resulted from the creation of USNORTHCOM following the events of
9-11.

NORAD Security Causes Controversy
Updated: June 18, 2008 03:52 PM

COLORADO SPRINGS - The nation's air and space defense command may not
be as secure as first thought in a terrorist attack. New information
released from a classified document says NORAD's new complex at
Peterson Air Force Base, is vulnerable.
In May, the heart of US Homeland Security moved Peterson AFB, from its
location inside Cheyenne Mountain. Information published from a
classified report says the existing security system at Peterson AFB
supporting the NORAD operation would likely fail in an attack.
Published reports claim the physical security system at the building
has a six-percent probability of effectiveness against a low level
threat and a zero-percent probability of effectiveness against a
medium or high threat. The information came from the Statement of
Facts put together by the Government Accountability Office.

Lawmakers concerned about NORAD security at Peterson
By PAM ZUBECK
June 16, 2008 - 5:02PM
Two Colorado lawmakers expressed concern Tuesday about security issues
at Peterson Air Force Base, the new home of the nation's premier air
and space defense command that moved last month from Cheyenne Mountain
Air Force Station.
Their comments came in response to The Gazette's report Tuesday that
military officials downplayed security concerns identified in a
classified vulnerability assessment of Peterson that concluded the
North American Aerospace Defense Command's new command center couldn't
withstand a medium or high threat and had only a 6 percent chance of
surviving a low-level threat.

NORAD and USNORTHCOM statement regarding news reports on the draft
(classified) GAO report
June 17, 2008
The article in The (Colorado Springs) Gazette is incomplete and
inaccurate and is based on a preliminary document that is classified,
titled ”Statement of Facts.”
News reports do not contain the GAO’s final (classified) analysis and
their recommendations for NORAD and USNORTHCOM action. Also missing
are the commands' responses to the GAO's recommendations, which are
classified.
The sensationalized accusation that military officials somehow misled
Congress is false. The GAO draft report does not draw this conclusion
and it is unfortunate that news reports have indicated otherwise. We
have conducted extensive classified and unclassified informational
briefings, tours and meetings with appropriate Congressional leaders.
