Convoy soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are wearing uniforms designed to
protect them from burns associated with enemy bomb attacks.
The Army has shipped 71,000 Nomex uniforms to theater and plans on sending
an additional 93,000 by next spring, Maj. Clay Williamson, assistant product
manager for clothing and individual equipment, said recently.
The The shipments come in response to a Sept. 21 "operational needs
statement" from Coalition Forces Land Component Command requesting 164,000
uniforms intended for "wheeled vehicle and convoy operators," he said.
The requirement also calls for 15,955 flame-resistant balaclavas and 160,000
pairs of flame resistant gloves. "The entire requirement will be filled by
April 30," Williamson said.
Traditionally, flame-resistant uniforms made of Nomex fabric are reserved
for aviators and combat vehicle crewman since these soldiers are at a
greater risk of being exposed to fuel fires, a hazard more associated with
helicopters and armored vehicles.
