GRATIS DICTUM
--------------------------
With Bush we got 9/11 and the response.
What will the new C in C be challenged with?
An convenient new threat every 8 years?

"The two main political parties ruled alternately as if by tacit
agreement. Politically they were practically indistinguishable (one
perhaps a shade more liberal) but in both camps supporters were more
swayed by personalities than by issues. Both parties were heavily
dependent on the large industrial conglomerates. Corruption was
widespread, the conglomerates dictated economic policy, and with few
outstanding exceptions, politicians' reputations were low."

Fixing the problems. That means spending money. That means being
attacked for spending money. ("Damn tax-and-spend liberals!")
It'll happen. Just watch.

Politicians feather their own nests, waste taxpayers money,
and start wars.
The masses want consumer goods, low taxes, nightly soaps
on TV, and no wars.

Sounds pretty good to me, as far as it goes. The devil is in the details.
How extensive are the goods? How low are the taxes? How interesting are
the soaps? And what means will we use to settle our disputes in lieu of
war?
We would all like the have everything and pay nothing, but that's not one of
our options.

I thought that was the idea of the United Nations, which replaced
the failed League of Nations.
Fine in principle, useless in practice, George Bush stuck two
fingers up to it, told his scriptwriters if you value your
jobs you'll invent a case for war, and promptly went to war.
It's the politicians and military that want and start wars, and
the armament makers who fund their election campaigns
that expect a return for their funding.

How has that been working out, do you think?
Do you think we might need a better option?

Guess that's (theoretically) what the "war to end all wars" is about...one
big last blast that ends the need to ever fire again. Trouble is, the only
reason why it works (again theoretically) is that's it's so bad it breaks
the world. Or, at least that's how it seems to me.
