Hello, I am pretty new to usenet and have recently been browsing about
this thread a bit, a friend of mine from some years back used to post on
it almost religiously. I came here initially to try and make contact with
him, but have become moderately interested in joining the 'conversation'.
I really don't feel like plodding about the threads for hours on end right
now, so I thought I would just ask a question, maybe 2.
So, my first thought is, when you folks mention 'magick', what exactly are
you referring to? I have been in and out of occult circles, and a solitary
practitioner and 'teacher/guide' for several years...

There is no generalized "you folks" here. Nearly everyone who
participates on alt.magick has a different approach to magick,
different opinions about what is involved and how various magical
concepts should be interpreted. There is no moderator and no
universally agreed-upon FAQ.

Hello carter-person. I would appreciate it if you didn't act like an angry
elementary school kid on threads I start. My goal, if any is to ATTEMPT to
have some sort of meaningful discourse in here, where people can share
their ideas and views candidly, openly and without having to worry about
intellectual midgets coming in to say "I am better than you". If all you
can do, or plan to do is blast people for their beliefs and views than I
am sure that all of us would appreciate it if you found some other forum
to substantiate your lack of tolerance.

Truth seeking almost always conflicts with ego inflation.
The kind of magick most often associated with spiritual development (as
opposed to temporal gain) is often called "high magick", if indeed it gets
called "magick" at all. This development is supposed to take place over time
as one practices rites and rituals designed to balance the forces operating
in one's spiritual/mental/emotional/physical life through specific
invocations, evocations, and banishments, and through mental and physical
exercises designed to heighten awareness and self-control. Also the
magician will undego a series of "initiations", each of which is believed to
result in an amplification of one's awareness and understanding of these
forces.
There is, of course, no guarantee that any of the operations will actually
produce those results, as evidenced by the behavior of many people who
profess to practice this Art.

Joining in the fray is a fine way to get confronted by all sorts of stuff.

Action.
The mechanism whereby one particular state of the universe is transformed
into the next state.
The manner in which a practioner is effective in making come about a
particular, intended, next state is the measure of hir magick.
