You can call it a survival tool, because (as an example) it is usefull to
see instantly the colour of fruits to judge their ripeness.
It is not essential cos dogs (as an example) do not see colour, but survive
just fine.

It is using the property that there is a limited amount of attention.
When inserting your nail into your thumb, it is a severe signal, but a
manageable one.
Enough to blot out something else, especially if you direct as much
attention to it as you can manage.
(with training you can blot out a lot without a competing signal, somewhat
demonstrated in fight club)
