Tom is right again about Catholics (and others) worshipping their gods
-
of course they have as much right to honour their gods
as the ancient Druids had to honour theirs !
And most of the old Druid gods are an anachronism in the present age.
I beleieve that our ancient Irish Druids
actually accepted Jesus, Mary in particular,
as ONE of their gods.
This would not be unusual for the ancient Druids
who regularly created and accepted new gods and goddesses,
assimilating characteristics of Greek and Roman gods especially.
What I think happened back there when Patrick returned to Ireland as
missionary
is that the Druids, and especially the kings, got to like the
Christian Trinity plus Mary etc
just like we would get to like a new TV series today -
The Bible stories sounded fabulous to them,
being in effect a powerful new TV series.
And they adopted it all, hook, line and sinker,
and welded it on to their own core Druidic beliefs.
Thus ancient Irish Druidry and Christianity coalesced in those far-off
days
and thus all the Druidic appurtenances the Irish Church has to this
very day.
Americans especially, coming to Ireland,
are often amazed at the difference between the Irish Church
and their own back hiome.
