This is an example of voltage multiplier.

But it is nothing but a metal chunk. It doesn't have any intelligence
except maybe for the topological intruige of spark gaps that are
visible all around.

the amazing diagram of z machine shows "the man goes in here". we
expect the wormhole output.

A Marx Generator. It sounded like a machine whereby you push a button
on it and Carl Marx comes strolling out, reconstituted from his Memes
in the System.

A variation of the voltage tripler common in TV tube anodes.
Diodes replace the spark gaps and resistors.

Diodes did not have the voltage capability in Marx's day.

Those are not sparc gaps but capacitors (and diodes)
