The Guide for the Perplexed, Moses Maimonides,
chapter XXIX of Part III (pages 315 to 320 in
the still-in-print Dover Publications edition)
addresses the idolatry of the "Sabeans" whose
religion consisted of worship of the stars
and from whom he believed the Patriarch Abraham
originally came. Maimonides relates what the
Sabeans believed and practiced as chronicled
Arabic translations of their texts as well as
their older works. He notes that:
"...they consider the stars as deities,
and the sun as the chief deity.
They believe that all the seven stars
are gods, but the two luminaries are
greater than all the rest. They say
distinctly that the sun governs the
world, both that which is above and
that which is below; these are
exactly their expressions."
