I'm curious what people think about the Grey School of Wizardry
( greyschool.com). It was apparently founded by Oberon Zell-
Ravenheart. OZR was on the cover of Pan Gaia's most recent ish...I
don't really know anything more about him. I have thumbed through his
big grimoire ("Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard") in the bookstore a
few times, which I understand is the basic course material for the
school.
It looks somewhat Harry Potterish, but OZR has been around for ever
(former publisher of Green Egg), which made me look a little deeper.
The "faculty" seem a reasonable bunch. It looks like it started out
as geared for kids but has added adult curricula.
I'm asking as an adult. I'm interested in the Grey School as an
opportunity to acquire a good thick basic level of knowledge. My
background is in wicca and (somewhat discongrously, perhaps) chaos
magick.
Hope this doesn't come off as a shill for the Grey school...I'm not
affiliated with them at all, just curious to get some honest
opinions.

If what you want is a good thick basic level of knowledge of pagan occult
practices and beliefs, I'm pretty confident his tutelage would give you
satisfaction. Otter has been around a long time. I knew him way back
before his name started mutating. As a veteran leader of neopaganism since
the sixties, Otter has a wide acquaintence with styles and methods. I
haven't read any of his recent stuff, but I'll bet it's pretty eclectic and
only moderately technical.
I think a guy like you could do a lot worse, honestly.

Could you elaborate a little on this answer? Thanks.

I can guess. as with many expositors of theurgy, there
is often a (set of) cosmology inherent to instruction.
each instructor comes with their own raft of beliefs,
biases, and potentially ensnarling limits and tropes.
it all depends on what level of broad-mindedness one
may seek to develop. studying under a mage may be
enough to expand one's horizons, but eventually some
kind of reflection of what is beyond them is needed.

A terrific amount of what is written about magic is horrible, horrible
dreck: misleading and false.
Of course, you can't really always tell what is useful. So reading
and studying magic is like panning for gold without even being sure if
the river that you're sieving has any auric traces or not.
