Hello Philip.

I'm not sure that magick is necessarily one thing, rather a hotch-
potch of things.

Have you read this groups Frequently Asked Questions?

You may be particularly interested in the section "Is magick real, can
anyone prove it?"

For clear instructions on how to perform a common ritual try

http://www.hermetic.com/browe-archive/pentagram%%20ritual.htm

It doesn't really do anything physical, at least outside your body.
One point sometimes made about the physicality, or otherwise, of
magick is that the electro-chemical activity of your neurons is
physical. Anyway, with regular use you should at least expect to feel
focused with a calm sense of 'power'.

Much of western magick was influenced, in one way or another, by a
'secret' group called the Golden Dawn (their membership list read like
a magician's who's who). Lots of their stuff was edited and published,
in contravention of oaths of secrecy, by a secretary called Regardie.
While he may have been a good secretary he was a poor magician. He was
also a Reichian therapist.

He helped popularise the notion that a lot of magic has a
psychological explanation but he used old, almost Freudian, theories
that were already starting to be discredited years ago. Rick has
argued these have hampered the development of better psychological
theories of magick. Have you seen Rick's website BTW?
