I don't know if you have heard or not, because it isn't american news,
but the whole country is on fire in Greece. They suspect eco-
terrorists engaged in a global scortched earth campaign to have
started dozens of forest fires, that have burned buildings and killed
more than 70 people. This is the type of stuff that really scares
me. It is too hard to prove that the fires were arson. What if
groups like these had ways of causing tsunami's by using explosives
under the sea floor? The owner of the mine that collapsed was blamed
for the earthquake that caused the collapse, and we could see more
earthquakes triggered days later in L.A. and Peru. Even the bridge
collapse could have been the product of terrorism. What if terrorists
were just driving semi-trucks loaded up with tons of concrete...

***Baloney! Greek officials believe the fires have been started b y
professional arsonists hired by unscupulous land developers for the purpose
of getting around Greece's strict land development laws.

That's true in a few cases. But there has been a whole host of
reasons. One fire was started when an old woman was baking koliva
(wheat confections served at funerals and memorial services) in the
open, in her back yard. She's been charged with criminal negligence.
In another case, two 11-year-old kids (foreign nationals) set a fire
as a prank. Earlier this summer, seasonal firefighters themselves set
fires so as to be assured of having jobs next season.
If you stop to think about it, the land-clearing motivation (for
development) makes sense only if the fire can be limited and
controlled. If an entire region is devastated, it *diminishes* the
land's value for development.
