After delineating German aeronautical research
during the latter phase of World War II, the broadcast
notes Vesco's hypothesis that the first true UFOs were
developed in Canada by subsidiaries of British aircraft
manufacturers, and were flown over the northern United
States in the postwar period to convince the U.S. to
share atomic bomb technology with their British allies.
Concluding with discussion of the possible implications
of the deliberate manifestation of UFO technology
misrepresented as being from outer space, the program
notes the vulnerability of a disillusioned,
economically and ecologically beset human race to
accepting falsified belief in "salvation from
above"--in this case "our brothers from space."
Is it possible that Vesco's hypothesis may be related
to former British and Canadian defense officials
"leaking" information about visits from space aliens!!
Could this be part of an enormous psy-op?!

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and NHK
(Japan Broadcasting Corporation) have successfully
taken high definition moving images through the
KAGUYA (SELENE) for the first time. The KAGUYA is a
lunar explorer launched on September 14
(Japan Standard Time, JST) from the Tanegashima
Space Center. The images were taken by the KAGUYA's
onboard High Definition Television (HDTV), which was
developed by NHK for space use. It is the first
high-definition image shooting of the Earth from so
deep in space - about 110,000 km away from the
Earth - in human history. The moving image data
acquired by the KAGUYA was received at the JAXA
Usuda Deep Space Center, then processed at NHK.
The satellite was confirmed to be in good health
through telemetry data received at the Usuda station.

to witness the launch of China's first lunar satellite in
Xichang, southwest Sichuan province. A travel agency in Xichang,

James Oberg, a longtime skeptic of the extraterrestrial
interpretation of the UFO phenomenon, has more than once
suggested a rather conspiritorial countertheory.

In June 1980, Moscow had a major UFO flap. People saw a
giant light and some claimed that aliens were chasing cars
and drilling holes through house windows. Tens of thousands
of citizens allegedly saw some or all of this weirdity.
In _Omni_ magazine, Oberg proposed that the KGB was behind
it: "The KGB, eager to muddy the waters and cover up public
recognition of the military space center at Pietsk, is only
too happy to promote scintillating stories about aliens
chasing cars and boring nasty holes in windows."
More recently, Oberg has pointed an accusing finger at
agencies of the U.S. government:

... Government representatives--officials, military
officers, etc.--used "UFO" as a convenient camouflage
for other official classified activities (such as
retrieval of crashed aircraft or nuclear weapons or
other objects); or used artificial "UFO stories"
(in oral, written, photographic, film, etc. form) as
"tracers" in studying the function of security
safeguards and personnel psychological responses; or
used "UFO" as an excuse (either intended or accidental)
to cover up improper, forbidden, or diplomatically
delicate activities... or any other activity that the
government--or any part of it--wanted to keep hidden.

Oberg made these charges in an open letter to Dr.
Steven Greer of the _CSETI_ organization, who is trying
to force the government to release UFO secrets. Oberg
supports Greer in wanting the secrets given to the public,
even though Greer expects the hidden data will support the
extraterrestrial hypothesis and Oberg believes it will just
show that the government lies to us a lot of the time.
Most conspiritologists would certainly like to see the
release of any alleged "UFO secrets" dealing with lost
nuclear weapons and "improper, forbidden, or diplomatically
delicate" activities.

Today's show is devoted to just one story.
Contributing Editor Nancy Updike went to Iraq to try to
figure out what it's like to be a private citizen working
in the middle of a war zone. Private contractors are a
part of this war in unprecedented numbers, but we don't
know that much about the people doing these jobs -- why
they chose to come to Iraq, and what they're seeing
that we can't.

Prologue.
This American Life host Ira Glass talks about
one thing you probably haven't heard about the
occupational hazards of working in Iraq: since you work
every single day, you never know what day of the week it
actually is. (3 minutes)

Act One. Airport.
The private security guys (from a company
called Custer Battles) who guard Baghdad International
Airport usually get along fine with the U.S. military
personnel stationed there -- except when Nancy happened
to be taping, and a huge fight broke out. (6 minutes)

Act Two. Hank.
Hank, a former military man, was hired by
Custer Battles to clean up one of its other Iraq operations,
guarding businessmen. He has a very clear idea of who he
wants working for him:
"flat-bellied, steely-eyed professionals."
Instead, he's trying to tighten up a outfit whose workers
once engaged in an extended firefight at a Baghdad
hotel -- against each other. (17 minutes)

Act Six. Cops.
Hundreds of Iraqi police officers have been
killed since the United States invaded Iraq. [That was a year
ago, current estimates are around 2,200 Iraqi police killed]
One Boston cop, Jerry Burke, is trying to keep them on the
job, and train them in Western police practices.
Besides rogue officers, not having enough guns and bullet-proof
vests, and men refusing to go on patrols, it's going OK.
He's also having a hard time setting up his driver with
his translator. (11 minutes)

Act Seven. Hank Redux
Nancy finally gets Hank, the
Custer Battles employee, to answer the question of whether
he ever has any reservations about his mission -- or the
country's mission -- in Iraq. (3 minutes)
