I feel I should apologise Joseph. When you posted this I wrote a very
long reply to it, but then before I posted it I went back and read
your post again, and found that I had misinterpreted and misunderstood
what you had written - completely. So I threw my hands in the air,
and glared at your post for a while (and of course this wasn't your
fault), but for a while I blamed you for my misunderstanding. And
whilst blaming you for my own lack of perception and clarity, I
started thinking - hey, this guy couldn't recognize his ego if he
tripped over it. There is just no point talking any further to him,
it's just a waste of time, and you know what - Tom and Erwin and the
rest of the gang were right.

These were the thoughts that went through my head for a time, but
after some reflection I realise, and I hope you do, that these
thoughts were very silly, because if I'd been paying proper attention
I would have read your post properly, and if I'd been paying attention
I should have been asking myself what I was exasperated at, but
instead I compounded the error by writing that piece of nonsense
above, which was insulting to you and also to me. Well - this is why
I'm apologising and facing up the consequences of not paying
attention, and saying to you 'Lo Siento', which is Spanish for I'm
sorry, but the exact translation means - 'I feel it.'

The fact is, I understand what Erwin and Tom are trying to do when
they make hurtful remarks to others. In spiritual practise there is a
place for understanding how we misunderstand how things really are,
and we stumble, and whether that is from our own distraction or
because Erwin stuck a foot out as we are passing by it doesn't really
matter, because both can be useful if at some point we stop and take
some time for reflection. I don't see Tom and Erwins more unsubtle
methods are the only way or even the best, but that's a matter for
them. It's just thier style.

I came across two great mp3 dharma talks today that helped with these
reflections. The first one is called 'Addressing Antisocial
Behaviour', and the second is called 'Manners Maketh the Man'. I hope
you find them palatable with your morning coffee. :)
