Never had that problem. btw, we always just used a peanut butter or
salsa jar lid for a watering dish for newly hatched chicks. Less than
1/2" deep, straight sides, no problems with drowning or tipping it
over, no worries about throwing it away. Just have to check a couple
of times a day, refill and clean it, because they'll be glad to stand
in it and shit while drinking.

We always kept two roosters, in case something happened to one of
them. Sure they fight occasionally, but they quickly develop an alpha
male/beta male relationship.
