I´m not sure what you may mean by "proper" but I´ll at least try!

I only have a few basics myself to be honest, although I do still use
rituals at certain times. The rituals are there as training (of the
mind - which isn´t so easy!). If you are able to perform magick
without them then be careful what you wish for!

Never say Never, so they say. If you look at the Middle Pillar
Exercise (MPE) and the God-names from Kether to Malkuth, it starts
with "I Am", which one is meant to pronounce daily. These are not, in
my opinion at least, names for anything that is not you. This is very
similar to the "Bornless Ritual"*.
I Am
the Lord God
Lord God of Knowledge
Almighty Living God
Lord of Earth

So look up the MPE and read out the God-names in English (or your
language). Perform it regularly while remembering what the God-names
actually *mean*. Like the "Bornless Ritual", it is designed to open
you up to the fact that, "Thou Art That".

Your body is both the real you and not the real you, or the
"appendage" as you succinctly put it. When one does the LBRP one
creates the thoughtforms, within one´s own sphere of influence, of the
four Archangels for them to ... inhabit (which is maybe the wrong word
but I can´t think of anything else at the moment). It is like an
Astronaut inhabiting his suit, if I can be a little vulgar in my
descriptions. I have said before here that I think we might compare
our Incarnations here on Earth to the kind of thoughtforms we create
of the Archangels to "inhabit" (I still don´t like that word).
Everything "down here" is a thoughtform of a higher being, including
what appears to be our very real and solid body. In fact read this
instead of reading my wandering ramblings:

Magical work is not uppity, it is about making Adonai Ha-Aaretz (which
is IAO or any god-name associated with Tipareth) incarnate on this
physical plain (or plane). Plainly speaking, it means simply to wake
up. Which I think is similar to Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy
Guardian Angel, or achieving Samadhi, or Gnosis. These are Holy tasks
and the very crux of the Great Work. You are not different or detached
from the "part of you upstairs", "look within, thou art Buddha", or
"thou art that", or the "kingdom of God is within you" (use anything
as a subsitute here from most any mystical text). Anything that
attempts to distract you from your own Divinity you can safely
discard.

I´d be interested in a fuller description, if you have time. :)

It is good to have a sense of humour I suppose. Perhaps at those
higher levels things are more symbolic - but I´m not sure it is
helpful to see ones Higher Divinity as something that finds its own
incarnation here as something lower, or ignorant, or something to find
amusing (I´ve been there!). Don´t put yourself down!

Have you read much about the "Empty Handed Adept"? I´m afraid I know
little of this myself but I think the term is pregnant with meaning (I
have the Buddhist text the "Heart Sutra" particularly in mind here).
Words, I think, are a very physical thing, so perhaps you were doing
these rituals on a different plain (or plane) than that which we have
breath to vibrate such words?
