QUOTE (jason @ Feb 8 2008, 09:40 AM)
...reminded me of something that Jeff McBride said: that we should
always BE the Magician. To improve is the natural consequence of
carrying your equipment around with you all the time, and to "do
something" at every opportunity you can take. He exampled buying
something at a local shop and doing some magic for the girl at the
counter - just to make a difference to her day.
Jeff talks about "living the role" every time I've taken a lecture or
class from him... and he likes to use the example of Chung Ling Soo
(if you don't know the story, go to the History section), and he
refers to the movie "the Prestige"...
Max Malini is another example of a magician who was always "on" and
always planning weeks and months ahead for his magic. There is a story
(and this may not be exactly right but here's the gist of it) of where
he was at a cleaner, and some important politician walked in and left
his coat to be cleaned. Max paid the cleaner to sew a card into the
lining of the politician's coat. He had no idea of when he would ever
see that politician again... ever. But he had set up his magic. It
turns out that he DID actually meet up with that very same politician
months later and guess what he did? He forced a card on him and
without even going near him, the politician found the card SEWN into
the lining of his jacket... Can you even IMAGINE the effect that must
have had on that man and any one else watching?!? This is what it
means to "live the life" of a magician...
For most of us, living like that is not really a practicality... we
can't show up at work in our magician's tunic or costume, we have
clients to deal with, we have office managers who insist you wear a
tie, we have our nurse's scrubs, our tool belts, or whatever else is a
requirement for our work... However, that doesn't mean we can't keep a
thumbtip or two in our pocket, a raven up our sleeve, some half
dollars in our coin purse, a hot rod or a deck of cards in our
briefcase...
If you make your living at magic, then (IMHO) it's a requirement that
you are always "on"... Jeff McBride can get away with wearing his
magician's "uniform" everywhere and anywhere because he doesn't have
any other "roles" to play... He's always got his "commando" belt
strapped around his waist... in an airplane or in a taxi cab... he's
ready to perform with a second's notice...
He's "the magician" because he's able to live the role with nothing to
distract him... he lives, eats, breathes, sleeps magic... he says he
doesn't even have a television hooked up in his home in order not to
distract him from his magic (that is, no TV other than a monitor
hooked up to his video camera that he uses to check his
performances)...
He says that if you come to his house you WILL have to sit and watch
him perform - usually something new - so that he gets a chance to
practice and develop his performance... If a delivery boy brings
pizza, he will do a coin matrix right on top of the pizza box as the
guy is holding it at the door... he will use a thumbtip to turn a
ribbon into a little rose for the girl at the hotel check-in in order
to get better service... he will use a d'lite to "pull" the light from
a taxi driver's cell phone and turn it into a tip for him... every
time he does this, he hands out his business card and says "I'm
performing at the Grand Theater tonight at 7 and 9 o'clock. If you
liked that, why don't you come on over for the show and bring some
friends. I quarantee you'll see things you've never seen before...."
Of course, we choose to live the way we want... so for someone like
Jeff, he IS performing as himself, because what you see on stage IS
him... he lives his whole life in that role...
But for most of us, when we get on stage or walk into some kid's party
in the family room, we have to put on (at least) a bit of an act...

I've been thinking recently, what're the differences between the 2?
Where would I draw the line? And I think I've found this imaginary
line, and it is shady and thin...
As of recently, I don't really see the point in revealing secrets.
Does it teach you anything? Not really, especially with a POS
explanation.
I think the concepts of the effects, however, are worth mentioning,
for example, dual reality or psychological forces. If you have the
building blocks, most likely, you can work your way up on how the
effect is done. Yes, I know, you don't like to think, but look at it
this way, when working out on how to accomplish an effect you're
trying to figure out, you might run into a new discovery or create an
entirely new, maybe even better effect in the end. Plus, doesn't it
always feel more rewarding to figure the effect out by yourself rather
than have it handed to you on a silver platter?
You can have a gray area in this matter though, which I think I tread
on a lot. When you use an effect to teach an idea or method. This will
in turn though, give them both a concept to learn from, and ideas on
how to use them.
Revealing secrets really doesn't help with presentation here does it?
Which is really, really important in mentalism, and perhaps equally
important in magic. Which, I think, it where at least 95%% of your work
should go into, presentation. Boring mentalism can be quite a horrid
sight to behold.
I think, when trying to make an effect, you should work backwards from
what you want, the final outcome of the effect, rather than the effect
stem from the method. With concepts being taught, instead of secrets
revealed, you can have the tools to do so.
