There's nothing like a demo to get you interested.

That's kind of funny, because I've never seen a demo in a magic shop,
and yet I buy ALL of my magic stuff in a shop (not online)... but then
again, the shop I use is a pro shop and the people that come in there
usually know exactly what they want...

oops... I take that back... in a different shop I don't usually use, I
saw the owner do a coin in bottle effect for another customer... he
didn't buy it though...

anyway, yeah, I know 90-95%% of the time what I want before I go in the
door... that way I don't do impulse buying for which I will be sorry
later...
helps the budget tremendously...

I spend next to naff all on tricks,I'm on a similar kind of track as
Q.
What I would find interesting though is the difference between how
much I spend,as a keen hobbyist, and most of the time knowing the
secret or as near as dammit and then moaning about the waste of a
tenner, and how Kevin2ex would feel if he wasted x amount of dollars on
some poor information and then shelling out to buy the said illusion.
Maybe this would hammer home the point of the vast wasteland that lies
between people such as myself, and the working professional such as
Kevin.
Maybe if he reads this he could enlighten us as to how much they[as a
team]spend on their illusions or tricks on average, and if he's ever
felt shortchanged by anything, that would definately be an eye-opener.
Cheers,Dale.

That would be really interesting to know from Kevin. I'd imagine he
is in the big money league on illusions; look at his website:

http://www.livingillusions.com/

How much do you think a water torture chamber would set you back?!

The other thing with someone like him is I reckon the creators are far
more likely to help him cos he is a "name". It could be more difficult
for them to sort out time wasters from the buyers if they are faced
witha semi pro or a hobbyist.

I'm pretty much the same. I rarely buy marketed effects. I prefer
books and buy utility props like cards, silks and sponges, or I make
props out of every day items.

I bought Die-Cypher last year though. You can't make that, it's a
precision item. I knew the secret anyway, but it was worth the
discount price I paid.

I always try to find out the secret behind a trick, mainly to avoid
buying rubbish that I'll never use. The problem is of course that if
you find a good tutorial for something, then you're quite tempted not
to buy it, but usually the original instructions have more detail and
depth than a quick online tutorial. But generally I only but tricks
that use a gimmick or something I can't just "learn".

I almost always know what Im buying before I buy it. Althought I dont
buy gimmicks at all anymore. I always lose them or stop using them. Im
a fan of picking up a pack of cards and just doing magic. I hate
carrying gimmicks. For that reason I'll usually buy dvds or books that
contain multiple card tricks or something like that then i pick and
chose the ones I want to use in my routine. But thats just me...

If I don't know the secret I tend to be very dissapointed. You have
to face the fact that an effect that is good for one individual may
not be suited for you. Therefore just looking at reviews, although it
can be helpful (unless they are biasis) is not always the best thing
to do when considering buying magic. You should alway try and find out
the secret or at least ask someone you know, who isn't going to profit
out of you buying the effect, if the secret would be suited to your
performance style ect.
