You probably could (although it would be harder, and probably more
permanent than the Polaroid gaff) and in my opinion an audience would
suspect the camera.
I'm sure that you could (given infinite resources) rig a camera up (via
wireless link) to a laptop off stage, where an unseen assistant could
add any image or text you like to a photo.
I'm also sure whatever method you used, the audience would suspect
something akin to the above...
