I'm at work and for some reason I can't watch youtube but if it's the
same effect what I saw before then here goes. They used two cameras
with two angles. The first angle when Paul talking to the guy who
brought the elephant then the second angle when they show the tent.
You can see how they switching angles. Paul walks in with the elephant
to the tent. When they release the sides the elephant is there you
just can't see it because the guy with the elephant walks backward to
the spot where the tent top cover them. The camera which is shows the
tent is a bit up so they didn't needed to walk too far.
(its time to press that +)

thanks porter...
I thought that may be what was happening, but the spectator's
reactions seemed so genuine...
and the fact that they made such a big deal about the top of the tent
is what made me think that it was just a perspective thing...
I even went back and watched it again before I posted to see if the
animal could hide behind the tent roof...
and I thought it was entirely possible, but I didn't think Paul
Daniels would resort to that type of thing....
so when they did the closeups, they continued moving the elephant off
the field and the whole thing was just camera angles and a couple of
stooges...
it would not have worked live... at least not as presented...
if that's the case, then WHERE ARE ALL THE CRISS ANGEL HATERS???
If it's good enough for Paul Daniels, then it should be good enough
for Criss Angel....
If you are badmouthing Criss, then you need to badmouth Mr. Daniels
for using camera tricks and stooges....

Yes even the great magicians used camera/angle work with stooges.
i find it a litle sad that Criss gets such a hammering and i think a
lot stems from jealousy at how successful he has been.
having said that i dont like the way/tone he presents his illusions
in...but thats my personal opinion.
i have said it many times if people are not happy lying then dont do
it,but if you are then do it and you can perform miracles.
the art of stooging is selecting that person(s) without the audience
knowing who they are and what they are doing and there are a number of
methods available.
perhaps we should have a topic just relating to the art of stooging?
remember illusionists pass hoops around levitating assistants to state
and show "look there is no levitating beam" but there is!! so we are
indirectly lying!!
we could get in to a long discussion regarding the pros and cons of
stooges but for me and my opinion if people are happy using them then
USE them!! they will always be suggested as the modus operandi along
with mirrors and the universal modern day explanation of all mentalism
NLP...yes that wonderul method of Neurolinguistic programming!!

Just a quick question to the more knowledgeable people in this
section.
As I've said before this isn't really my field{Forgive the pun}But do
any of you guy's think there is a way to actually conceal the elephant
after the vanish?
I was thinking along the lines of a large mirror, leaning slightly
forward,so it would show the reflection of the grass.
Maybe the mirror could be laid flat on the floor with cables attatched
to the rear of the mirror and anchored to the ground,so it could just
be lifted up and it goes to its position automatically due to the
length of the cables, which would be angled in towards the centre, hence
making them unseen.
The elephant, with it being trained, could be told to kneel so the
mirror would not have to be so big.
I know this was probably not used in this illusion but this could
maybe come in handy for other open air applications.Forgive me if this
just seems like the ramblings of a mentally unhinged, ill informed
tossbag, but I thought I'd like to get your inventive juices flowing.
Cheers,Dale.

Smart idea Rigiddigits but its already done before. MM showed one way
of the disappearing elephant with mirror. Paul Daniels could have done
either but why would he do that if there is an easier way? You can do
example dig a huge hole behind or inside the tent and when the
elephant walked down cover the hole with trapdoor which has lawn on
the top. In that way you can rip off the whole tent and no need camera
trick.

Been away for a while, but I'm back.
Here's the deal - there is a hole underneath the rear panel. As the
elephant is led into the box, it slips through the back panel and down
into the hole. Yes, an elephant can step into a hole 4 feet deep,
which would be enough to hide it laying down.
When the back panel is lowered it covers the hole.
Ta-daah!
I grew up with Paul Daniels, and it is illusions like this that make
him one of the all-time masters of magic. It's clean and simple.

that's just like Julian... stay away for all this time, then come
back an start stirring up trouble right away...
here we thought we had this figured out...
yeah, I see what you are saying... the convincer was that Paul and his
"spectators" walked right across the back panel as they entered the
tent from the rear.
They must have rigged some boards and told the specs exactly where to
cross so it looked like it was laying on solid ground instead of over
a hole...
and all the talk of looking up was just a distractor from thinking
about a hole behind the tent....

I'm happy to see you back Julian. I still say Paul did the way as I
said. I know that method Julian but if Paul did that way why he needed
two camera angles? One of the camera is high so the elephant doesn't
needed to walk so far. Why there is a cut before they rip off the top
of the tent? But you are right either because could be done that way
too. I mentioned before the hole in the ground.

I think the high camera angle was to show us "behind" the tent. I
happen to know that this does use a hole under the back panel. This
was one of the first Paul Daniels illusions I learned as a teenager.
Can't remember who taught me this, but I know there was another
magician before Paul Daniels to do something like this.
The back panels are solid inside, to allow them to walk over it.
I'm not sure why they did the camera cut. They didn't need to do
that.

To add on to this illusion. What about the opening act by Lance
Burton in one of his TV Special; where a huge bus appeared behind a
drawn screen in the open desert? Was he using the same principle with
two cameras?

I didn't see that one. But I'll bet the camera angle was very
specific. If anyone has a link to this, please post it!
